On September 18, 2010, the Belgravia Community joined in the city wide Community Day by hosting a Belgravia Rink Party and Membership Drive. Family friendly activities started at 4 pm with a supervised Jumpy Thing, facepainter, and playground leaders for children’s games. A local business, Gracious Goods, gave out free sample cookies to the children for the first 2 hours .
The membership table was opened 4 – 8 pm. The table also included information on various local projects, city programs and nearby recreational facilities. Most Belgravia Board members were on hand to chat to residential members in a festival atmosphere. By 5 pm we had long lines for both the facepainter and membership table. A free hamburger/hot dog BBQ was available to those families purchasing annual community memberships starting at 6 pm in the rink.
A live local band “Mr. Suede” entertained us under the canopy tent set up in the rink, from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. There was a small dance area under the tent that was enjoyed by the young at heart.
Door prizes that were donated by local businesses and city attraction passes were given out at the end of the evening by a membership draw. Community members from all age ranges came together to interact. Simple name tags introduced people to each other. We recruited some old and some new volunteers to host the event, and everyone who was still around at 8:30 pm helped to clean up, encouraging community spirit. We planned for 150 and were thrilled to attract over 300 people. The day was a great success and our membership drive greatly exceeded our expectations.
